Analytics - NetSuite Direct Query Links in PowerBI Desktop

Direct Query Web Links can be used to create PowerBI data sources which pull data from NetSuite directly.

The web link can be copied from the Data Source record in NetSuite. If the Data Source does not show a Direct Query Link URL make sure that you have updated the SuiteBundle to the latest version and that you have followed the instructions in the Direct Query Web Links article.

If you have not yet generated the Token and Secret needed to authenticate, you can follow the instructions in the article Generating Tokens & Secrets for Direct Queries.

Use in PowerBI Data Sources

Once you have a web link setup, the following steps can be used to create a dataset in PowerBI.

From PowerBI Desktop, navigate to the Home tab and use the Get Data drop down to select a "Web" data source.

Paste the direct query link for the data source. Note that you do not need to enter the Token and Secret as part of this step.

If you have not used direct links with this PowerBI project yet, you will be prompted to enter credentials for authenticating. Select Basic as the authentication type and enter the Token in the User name field and the Secret in the Password field. When done, click Connect.

You will be presented with another screen where you can make adjustments to field types, filter the data further or transform columns and rows. This feature is documented pretty extensively by Microsoft in their online help.

Make sure if nothing else to rename the query in the properties side bar.

When complete, click the Close & Apply  button:

After the data has loaded, it will show up in the right hand panel where fields can be selected.

Once the dataset is published to PowerBI Online, the data can be refreshed on a scheduled basis without the need to coordinate NetSuite data pushes from scheduled scripts.

Resetting Stored Credentials

If you ever need to reset stored credentials in PowerBI, you can do so under the File > Options and settings > Data Source Settings... menu item.
