NetCash Reauthenticating Bank Connections
Overview
Once a bank connection has been established, situations may arise when the connection is lost. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Some bank institutions require regular reauthentication per security policy or there may be a connection issue with the third-party provider.
Missing transactions in NetCash may be an indicator of a connection issue, or you may receive an error message or email asking you to reauthenticate. In any case, please follow the steps below to reauthenticate your accounts.
Applies to Third-Party Providers
This article applies exclusively to connections via third-party providers including Plaid, Finicity, GoCardless, Skript, and NetSuite's Match Bank Data.
For questions related to other connections, please contact Netgain Support.
Step-by-step process
- Navigate to NetCash > Setup > Bank Connect
- Select the three dots to the left of your bank institution record and select Update Connection
- You may be required to provide your login credentials
- Select the three dots to the left of your bank institution record and select Update Connection
- Navigate to NetCash > Help > NetCash Bank Help
- Select your bank provider on the righthand side, then scroll to the bottom and select Refresh Connection
- As instructed, please wait for 15 minutes after the refresh script is completed before pulling transactions (see below)
- Select your bank provider on the righthand side, then scroll to the bottom and select Refresh Connection
- On the same page, select Sync Transactions
- Check for errors in the Log column.
At any point during the above steps, if you see error logs or the expected transactions do not sync, please reach out to your implementation consultant (if implementation is in progress) or Netgain support (post-implementation).
Transaction sync delays are possible
Please note that it is not uncommon to see transactions behind by 1-2 days, as Finicity/Plaid use smart batch aggregation, where aggregation occurs on alternate days.
Troubleshooting
Update Connection keeps failing, or the log asks for Connect Fix
Start with Update Connection on the existing institution record, as described above. If the daily error email or the Log column says to use Connect Fix and answer MFA questions or enter a one-time passcode, the bank still needs authentication. If Update Connection and Refresh Connection do not clear it, re-link the existing institution through Finicity:
- Navigate to NetCash > Setup > Bank Connect, hover over New Bank Connection, and select Finicity.
- Select your existing bank institution, click Link, and click Save.
- Navigate to NetCash > Help > NetCash Bank Help, select your bank provider, and click Refresh Connection. Wait 15 minutes, then click Sync Transactions.
If your bank uses a hardware or VIP security token, Finicity Connect may ask for the six-digit code from the token (status code 185). If the error returns after you re-link, contact Netgain support. While the connection is down, you can bring in activity with NetCash Switching to Manual Transaction Uploads or move to another connection option.
Duplicate bank institution or account records after reconnecting
Reauthenticating, or renewing consent (for example the annual Skript consent), can create a new Bank Institution record and new Bank Account records instead of continuing the existing ones. A New Bank Connection can have the same effect, so use it only as the fallback above and check for duplicates afterward.
Signs of duplicates include:
- Only some of your accounts appear in the Reconcile and Manual Match dropdowns, or saving the GL account mapping fails. A GL account can map to only one bank account record.
- New transactions land on accounts you do not expect.
- Earlier reconciliations or imported transactions seem to be missing, because they are attached to the old records.
To fix it, keep your original records and move the connection details onto them:
- Compare Current Balance on each NetCash Bank Account record. The balance on the live record changes after every sync, so this shows which record the feed is writing to.
- Copy the GL account and segmentation (such as department, class, and location) from the duplicate record onto the record you are keeping.
- Follow the steps listed here to copy the connection fields from the new institution and account records onto your existing ones, then inactivate the new records.
If you imported transactions by CSV before connecting, set the Last Manual Entry Date on bank account records to avoid re-importing the same transactions.
Inactivate the new records, not your original ones
Inactivating your original accounts hides them, and their transaction history, from NetCash pages.
If automation rules then fail with "Please enter value(s) for: Department", set the Bank Line Department Default on the bank account you kept.
New accounts only appear through NetCash > Setup > Bank Connect, not by creating records on the Bank Accounts list.
